Joseph W. Blauvelt

Joseph W. Blauvelt, former Advertising Director of the Rome Sentinel Company, died on Sunday, July 10, 2005 in Rochester, NY. Mr. Blauvelt was born in Dumont, New Jersey, son of Joseph and Florence Blauvelt.

He was united in marriage to Annette Pizza on May 25th, 1947. Mrs. Blauvelt died October 10th, 2002. He was educated at Westwood High School and New York University.

Mr. Blauvelt joined the Daily Sentinel in 1973 after serving as general manager of the BEE Publications, Williamsville, a chain of six suburban newspapers. He previously was employed on the advertising staff of the Buffalo Evening News and with the Ellis Advertising Agency in Buffalo.

As Sentinel Advertising Director he was instrumental in the creation of the Sunday Sentinel. While at BEE Publications he started the practice of bringing women in the Advertising Department as full time representatives. He continued this at the Sentinel and was proud to be a leader of this in the newspaper industry in New York State.

Mr. Blauvelt served six years as director of the Tome Area Chamber of Commerce and was elected Chamber President in 1981. He served as President of the Tome United Way. He was community chairman of Project Odin when the effort that brought a group of Air Force winners of the Congressional Medal of Honor to Rome for three days. He was a member of the Steering Committee of the Griffiss Air Force Base Military Affairs Committee.

A director of the New York Newspapers Advertising and Marketing Executives Association from 1974 through 1982, Blauvelt also served on the College and Education Committee of the International Advertising and Marketing Executives Association. He was a member of the Fish Creek Club, the former Rome Club and Teugega Country Club.

Joe had studied advertising at the American Press Institute at Reston, Virginia. He was a decorated veteran having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded a Philippine Presidential Citation, the Bronze Star Medal, two U.S. Army Commendation Medals and U.S. Army Combat Infantrymen Badge. He left the United States Army as Chief Warrant Officer, after having participated in five amphibious landings in the Pacific Theater and the Korean Campaign. He was also affiliated with the Army War College at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He spent a period of his career serving his country on special assignments, part of which he and his family resided in Hawaii. He enjoyed restoring old automobiles and collecting clocks. Joe was an avid reader.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, karen A and Richard W. Bradley, Penfield, NY; grandson and wife Matthew and Jennifer Bradley, granddaughter Jennifer Bradley and a great grandson Cameron, all of Penfield. He was predeceased by a son, Michael, two brothers Russell and Richard and a dearly beloved aunt Alice Gallagher.

Interment will be at the family crypt at Whitehaven Memorial Park, Pittsford, New York. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by Strong and Burns Funeral Home.

What a man and what a life he led. I can't stop crying or missing him. And thinking how much he didn't deserve everything and I wish I could have told him some more things that I didn't have the chance to.
